Teeth Grinding (Bruxism) Treatment
Bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching), which is frequently encountered today due to factors such as intense stress, anxiety and sleep disorders, can continue for a long time without being noticed and can lead to serious dental health problems. Bruxism usually occurs unconsciously at night while sleeping and manifests itself with symptoms such as pain in the jaw muscles, headaches in the morning, abrasions, cracks or fractures in the teeth. This condition can negatively affect not only dental health but also the functions of the jaw joint (TMJ).
The main methods applied in our clinic in the treatment of teeth grinding are as follows;
- Night Plates (Occlusal Splints): These transparent plates, specially prepared for the person, protect the teeth and the jaw joint by preventing the teeth from touching each other during the night. It also helps the jaw muscles relax.
- Botox Application: Botulinum toxin can be applied to the masseter (jaw) muscles to reduce jaw muscle hyperactivity that develops due to bruxism. Botox prevents excessive muscle contraction and greatly relieves symptoms.
- Behavioral and Psychological Support: Addressing the psychological causes underlying teeth clenching, such as stress and anxiety, is also an important part of the treatment process. Psychological support can be recommended if necessary.
- Dental Corrections: Malocclusions, faulty fillings or high dentures can trigger bruxism. If necessary, occlusion is balanced with dental interventions.
